Most common off the south and east coasts of the South Island in 100-700 m depth; also found on the Chatham Rise and northern Campbell Plateau (Ref. 9258). Currently the the country's largest chondrichthyan fishery by weight ( 6,200 tons in 1995-1996). A substantial fishery exists for this species but it is also taken as a by-catch of the inshore trawl fishery. Landed throughout the year (Ref. 9258). Exported mainly to South Korea. Maximum size recorded 111 cm TL. Voucher specimen held at the NMNZ (Ref. 5755). Also Ref. 247,45493, 58461, 75154. |
